Panel recommends doctors screen patients for illicit drug use

(CNN) – A visit to your doctor could one day include mandatory screenings for drug use.

The US Preventive Services Task Force is recommending doctors screen all adult patients for illicit drug use, including pregnant women.

The expert panel said doing so could help with accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.

The move comes as the country tries to grasp with a nationwide opioid epidemic.

The panel does not specify how doctors should screen patients, and is leaving that up to medical professionals.
