Paralyzed tri-state woman back behind the wheel after nearly ten years

A woman with ties to Owensboro is getting back behind the wheel nearly ten years after being paralyzed in an accident.

Chelsea McDonald says nothing would stand in her way if she put her mind to it, and now she’s achieved a new milestone.

It was an accident on the Bluegrass Pkwy in 2010 that left her paralyzed from the chest down.

Nine years later, she’s driving again.

Wanting to get back out into the community, McDonald bought a van designed with features, allowing her to drive.

It sat in her driveway for months.

But, the new year gave her the confidence to get behind the wheel.

It’s going to take some time getting used to, but she says it gives her a new-found purpose.

The biggest obstacle McDonald says she has faced has been the mental hurdles, and thinking she was completely out of control

She says doing something like driving for the first time in nearly ten years was a big recovery step.
