A church caught fire in Posey County after a transformer exploded around 9 a.m. Monday.
Eyewitness News is live at St. Francis Xavier Church where the fire is now out.
No injuries have been reported, but the church sustained some damage.
Eyewitnesses say they saw the transformer explode which sent the back of the church up in flames.
Posey County’s Volunteer Fire Department quickly responded to the scene and had to call for back up.
Witnesses and law enforcement also helped fight the blaze by assisting with the pump truck.
Posey County Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Droege says if it wasn’t for the extra help, the fire may still be burning.
“Those guys know enough to put a knock down on a fire. They did a good job. The first units on scene, I think there were three people here from our department. They were able to hook the hydrant and we had help from law enforcement. They ended up bumping our truck for us. Posey County Sheriff’s Department was here. Our guys are able to go in and put a knock down on it which is pretty good,” says Chief Jeff Droege.
The roof and attic of the church are damaged, but the sanctuary only has moderate smoke damage.
Church officials are still waiting on engineers to assess the damage and for the power to be turned back on.
As of now, Sunday services for next week are still on.
