Search suspended in Virgin Islands for missing Kentucky woman due to tropical storm

News

Virgin Islands (CNN) – The search for a Kentucky woman who disappeared in the U.S. Virgin Islands has been suspended as tropical storm Karen approaches.

Officials say 48-year-old Lucy Schuhmann was reported missing last Thursday by an Airbnb owner in St. John, where she was staying.

Items belonging to her were found in her room, but she never checked out of the Airbnb as planned.

Her rental vehicle and day pack were also found, but there’s no more information about where she could be.

Locals who helped in the search say the case is weighing on them.

“We haven’t had any kind of missing persons like this. This is what’s really nerve wracking. Also, the fact that I live like right there. I can see Salt Pond from my house.”

“The backpack was found at the top of the trail. They had several people with drones going down in the crevices. Boats were out there. There’s friends of mine that have boats, they’ve been going in and out of the coves.”

The search will resume once the storm passes and it’s safe to continue.
