Some school districts across the country crack down on vaping with specialized sensors

SYRACUSE, Ny. (WSYR/KWKT) – Some school districts across the country are cracking down on vaping in schools with specialized sensors.

Our sister stations in Texas and New York recently profiled school districts who installed the ‘Halo Smart Sensors.’

These devices look like smoke detectors and can tell the difference between nicotine and THC.

When the sensor detects someone vaping, it will send a text message to administration to let them know about it.

“One thing that has kind of resulted out of this is we have got more students that are just turning them in, just giving them to some of our staff members and saying ‘didn’t realize this was that bad, here I wanna give this to you, I don’t wanna leave it laying around.”

One school administrator said it’s not about catching kids. It’s about giving our students a reason to say ‘no’.
