Authorities in Central Indiana say what was first believed to be an active shooter situation at the Cummins Plant in Seymour, was an apparent murder-suicide.
Investigators have not identified those killed in the shooting, but police say an employee shot his boss before taking his own life. The Cummins Engine Plant is about 2 ½ hours north-east of Evansville.
When word of the shooting broke Thursday morning, nearby businesses and schools were placed on lockdown.
The first officers on scene found both victims in one room on the second floor of the building. It’s still not clear if anyone else was involved in an argument prior to the shooting.
Police and SWAT officials were able to secure the scene after about an hour.
” The guy I work next to, on his radio it said shooting on test side of Cummins plant,” said Elijah Brown, “We kind of looked at each other in disbelief, they started saying shots were fired. Time to evacuate the buiding.. Running in panic, but you know they pretty much kept it under control. In a moment like that, it’s all you can do is freak out and try to get out as best you can.”
Officials at the engine plant say they will close the facility through the weekend and re-open on Monday.
