DOWNS, Ill. (WCIA) — Two people are dead and others in the hospital after a bus collision in McLean County, Illinois.

It happened around 8:30 Wednesday night on I-74 between Downs and Bloomington. Officials say a school bus carrying the Normal West JV girls basketball team collided with a semi. State police say the semi was driving the wrong way on the interstate.

State police say Charles Crabtree, of Normal, has died. He was on the bus. They also say the semi truck driver, a 34-year-old man from Iowa, died as well. His name has not yet been released.

A representative from OSF HealthCare says at least seven people are in the hospital. Four patients were taken to OSF Saint Joseph in Bloomington, three went to OSF Saint Francis in Peoria, and others are at Advocate BroMenn. A representative for the school district says she’s been informed all students who were transported are in stable condition. State police say eight students were on the bus at the time of the crash. They were playing at Champaign Central Wednesday night.

Traffic is being detoured off of the westbound lane of I-74 at the Downs exit to US 150.

Parents are being told to go to Normal West High School and not to the scene.
