MOUNT CARMEL, Ill. (WEHT) – Two people died in a house fire Saturday morning.

According to the Wabash County Sheriff’s office, the two victims were 79-year-old John Carwile and his daughter, 55-year-old Sondra Burton.

Chief of Mount Carmel Fire Dept. Francis Speth says around 8:30 a.m. the fire department was informed of a structure fire with two people possibly inside.

The Sheriff’s Dept. pulled one person from the home with the help of a neighbor.

According to Wabash County Sheriff Derek Morgan, a deputy then noticed another person still inside the home but said the flames and smoke were too much for a single person to battle.

Speth said the department arrived and the living room, front porch and car in the driveway were all in flames. Speth said they battled the flames for 45 minutes to an hour until it was put out.

The coroner pronounced both people dead at the scene.

At this time, the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Autopsy’s have been scheduled for Monday afternoon.
