ANDERSON, Ind. (AP) — Central Indiana police say vandals who broke into Anderson’s historic Wigwam Complex smashed a window and set off several fire extinguishers inside the building.

Police say they were alerted to Saturday’s break-in when the haze created by the discharge of the fire extinguishers set off the shuttered building’s fire alarm.

Anderson Police Department Sgt. Freddie Tevis says that there were signs of some vandalism inside the building, but the 9,000-seat gymnasium was not damaged.

The Wigwam was built in 1962 and is the world’s second-largest high school basketball venue, ranked behind the Fieldhouse in New Castle.

School officials closed the building in 2011 as part of a wider budget-cutting plan that included cutting 65 teachers’ jobs.
