VHS is full of rabbits, officials call it “the great Easter dump”

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – The Vanderburgh Humane Society is full of rabbits and officials call it “The Great East Dump”.

Officials say people buy rabbits for their kids during Easter.

Around this time of year, they say the kids get tired of the rabbits and give them up to the humane society.

VHS currently has 33 rabbits at its shelter, with more expected to come in this week.

Officials say it gets overwhelming when they have more than 20 rabbits.

“They take a while to take care of each day, so we’re having a staff person dedicated just to rabbits every single day for hours. Their whole workday is just the bunnies. They’re expensive to care for and it’s just overwhelming, so we need people to adopt them.”

VHS says owners also sometimes accidentally purchase male and female rabbits, which later have a litter of bunnies.
