(WEHT)- According to several national news outlets including the New York Times and the Associated Press, 38-year-old former South Bend, Indiana mayor Pete Buttigieg is reportedly ending his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Buttigieg started strong in the primaries, winning the most delegates in the Iowa Caucus and tying Sen. Bernie Sanders in the New Hampshire delegate count. However, Buttigieg struggled in the two contests that followed in Nevada and South Carolina.

Buttigieg made history by becoming the first openly gay presidential candidate in either major party. The decision comes just days before the Super Tuesday elections and a little over two months before the primary in his home state of Indiana.

Fellow presidential hopeful, Tom Steyer dropped out Saturday night shortly after polls closed in South Carolina.
