Youth First hosts discussion on the impact social media has on underage drinking

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – Some in Evansville discuss the impact social media has on underage drinking.

The event hosted by Youth First featured interactive activities to talk about the importance of paying attention to what kids are doing online and how they’re spending their time.

Organizers say the event was aimed at helping the community recognize the warning signs in someone who may be abusing a substance and how to address the topic with younger kids.

One panelist says one of the most important things parents can do is address the situation head-on with their kids and play an active role in their lives.

“We’ve got to be really intentional about these topics. You just as a parent aren’t going to fall backwards into good solutions on how to address substance use, you aren’t going to fall backwards into good solutions on how to manage screen time. I’m a father of eight kids and I think we all kind of wish ‘Well, things will work their way out,’ but unless you’re intentional, they’re not going to.”

Tables were also set up with teens demonstrating how to use various social media apps.
