Home Team Friday Countdown: Week #9

Sports

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – Home Team Friday’s countdown crew breaks down the three biggest games in the Tri-State for week #9.

(Randall Parmley)
“It’s the final week of the regular season for our Indiana teams and conference championships will be won tomorrow night, Mike and Zane are standing by, ready to break down 3 of the biggest games on tomorrow night’s schedule.

Tonight’s games are, Mt Vernon and Jasper for the big 8 championship. Memorial at Castle and another game part of the SIAC craziness set for tomorrow night. The annual west-side showdown between Mater Dei and Reitz. Lets start with the final championship game in the Big 8. The conference is folding after this year…Mt vernon has never won the championship…Mike, What a potential way for Mt. Vernon to go out if they can beat Jasper?

(Michael Gilbert)
“Mt vernon is contention for the school’s first ever big 8 title in football.
Their offense has been a big piece to their success. The wildcats is averaging 43 points in wins this year and Brady Hook has been a go to guy. He’s fresh off a 3 touchdown game against Princeton. I like the wildcats in this one.”

(Zane Clodfelter)
“Jasper has been the class of the Big Eight since its beginning, winning at least a share of the conference title 23 times–including 17 outright championships–so it’s fitting they have a chance to go out on top. Jasper has won all but twice on the field in 62 previous meetings against Mount Vernon so history is on their side. Since a 1-3 start, Jasper is on a roll with three straight victories over conference foes and they also have the biggest scoring differential among Big Eight teams.”

(Randall Parmley)
“For memorial, its pretty simple, win at castle and you claim at least a share of the championship. Zane, You have the Tigers.

(Zane Clodfelter)
“The Tigers control their own destiny, beat Castle tomorrow, and they’ll win a share of the conference. John Hurley’s team shouldn’t be lacking confidence, Colton Pence had five touchdown passes against Harrison last week and his top receiver, Finn McCool, had two touchdowns on just three receptions. Memorial has won the last three matchups so they know how to beat talented Castle teams, even in Paradise.”

(Michael Gilbert)
“Let’s talk castle. The Knights suffered a 36-35 overtime loss to North last Friday. You can bet that will fire up Doug Hurt’s team this week. Castle has a quiet (5-3) record and notable wins against Mater Dei & New Albany. If Castle’s defense steps up to plate to give their offense something to work with. We may see the Knights get their first win against Memorial since 2015.”

(Randall Parmley)
“Staying in the SIAC, The west-side rivalry resumes…
Mater dei and Reitz…
One of the best rivalries in the Midwest….
Little more on the line this year from Mater Dei mike…
The Wildcats need a win to have a chance to share the SIAC crown.”

(Michael Gilbert)
“What’s also cool is that if Mater Dei wins and a couple other things go their way, the Wildcats could potentially have a share of the SIAC title. Now, Mater Dei has a lot of momentum on their side after a thrilling 10-7 upset victory over Central. If John McGrew can keep running the ball well for the Wildcats and Mike Goebel’s team keeps up their nice defense… Mater Dei could snap a 3 game series losing streak to the Panthers.”

(Zane Clodfelter)
“Even as a native eastsider, I can tell you this is the best rivalry in all of southern Indiana. Reitz enters this game searching for a morale boost heading into postseason play with the Panthers just 3-5 on the season. Reitz held off Bosse last week thanks to their defense, which forced four turnovers in a five-point victory over the Bulldogs. If Reitz wants to beat Mater Dei for the fourth straight time, they might need to open up the offensive playbook and get creative to get the stingy Mater Dei defense off balance early.”

(Randall Parmley)
“As always thank you so much, a lot on the line this week, we will be right back right after these messages.”
