Indiana opens the season with easy win against Western Illinois

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WEHT) Year 3 of the Archie Miller era is off to a roaring start. Indiana beats Western Illinois 98-65 in the Hoosiers’ season opener.

Justin Smith led IU with 24 points. Al Durham added 21 points.

Post-game comments:

Archie Miller: For our guys there’s a lot of newness out there, there’s a lot of inexperience, there’s a lot of question marks, sometimes, in terms of what’s gonna happen on game night and for us to be able to win the game. I’m excited about that. And our team should be as well. We’ve got a long way to go, we’re not a very good defensive team right now, but as we get a little bit more healthy and we get Devonte back, I think everyone can tell that there’s not a guy who doesn’t belong out there so hopefully it continues to give us confidence that what we’re doing is working and we can continue getting better.

Al Durham: We talk about it every day in practice, pushing the tempo and just outrunning our opponents really, so if we can outrun our opponents for most of the game, we can run them down really.

Ron Phinisee: That’s our main focus is just get out in transition and just score easy buckets. We had a lot of steals and Trayce and I think Justin had a couple blocks too, and we got out in transition and that’s where we are at our best.
