VICTORIA NATIONAL GOLF CLUB, Ind. (WEHT) The first round of the Korn Ferry Tour Championship teed off this morning at Victoria National. The start of play means the start of fans arriving for the tournament.

Golf fans from across the Tri-State and beyond are filling the course to watch today’s action.

“It seems to be growing every year, seems to be more people coming out,” says Dennis Vincent, who saw the 1st round.

They started arriving to watch them start their round. For students from Loge Elementary and other schools, they watched and learned.

“It’s really nice,” says Gage Vincent, a 4th grader. “Seeing all the players, just seeing how hard they can hit.”

3rd and 4th graders from the school, including some in The First Tee program, had Victoria National as their classroom, where they learned about the game and values like confidence — courtesy and respect.

“We try to give them a unique learning experiences, and this is a unique one. Even a lot of the teachers have never been out here before, so it’s an experience for them. A lot of the kids are excited about it,” says teacher Troy Wagner.

Tournament organizers say they don’t have an estimate on what attendance will be this year since it’s the first time the championship’s happening at Victoria National, but hope it will be bigger than past editions.

“Everybody seems very supportive. It’s a good crowd. This is a very nice event,” says Becky Baker, who saw her son, Chris, shoot a 63 today.

“It’s great. With a round like that, who can complain about anything,” she says.

Chris’s coach Brad Morrow says the crowd can play a difference, no matter how many watch.

“When you get that support, when you get that love and you have that feeling, that goes a long way because it doesn’t have to do with how big and strong you are, it has to do with standing there and hitting the shot to that pinpoint location,” he says.

Morrow also says the crowd here know how good this course is and will be cheering for good golf, no matter who it is.
