Local slugger competing in MLB Junior Home Run Derby

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – (WEHT) An Evansville 14-year-old is headed to the MLB All Star game to compete in the Junior Home Run Derby. Isaac Mayer is one of only 10 kids his age to get this rare trip.

The slugging star will spend next week in Cleveland, competing on Saturday morning at Progressive Field, home of the Cleveland Indians. Mayer is in the 14-U age division and advanced to the competition by just a single home run.

“I have never participated in anything at All Star Week, never been on a big league field,” said Mayer. ” Not really anyone from Evansville gets to go to one of these big events, so it’s a once in a lifetime experience.”

Mayer will be a freshman at Mater Dei in the fall. He says his biggest baseball idols are Yadier Molina, Albert Pujols, Mike Trout, and Bryce Harper.
