EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – Mater Dei wrestling has been one of the premiere programs in the state for quite some time.
The mat cats have won 12 state championships, that’s the second most in Indiana state history. Now, the team is eyeing another tough test this weekend, regionals.
The Wildcats know how to get ready for the next stage, they have been dominant at the sectional level. Mater Dei has won a sectional, 44 years in a row, dating back to 1977.
Head coach, Greg Schaefer, says his team has been focused moving forward.
“It’s a good group of young men, and they know when to have fun and when to work hard. It’s important to know when to flip the switch, and try to enjoy what they are doing. These guys enjoy training, and they enjoy competing, and that’s a big part of it.”
Senior, Kane Egli, understands how tough it is for a team to advance and win in the later stages of a wrestling season. He say’s this team is ready for the challange.
“It’s just a wonderful feeling, we grind in here, we put in the work together, and to see everyone succeed, is a wonderful feeling. Just to win regionals would be great, it would make it four times that my team has won. This is by far one of my favorite teams that I have wrestled on and winning it would mean the world to me.”
Mater Dei is looking for their 10th straight regional championship.
