Memorial boy’s discuss 2A state championship

HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – Memorial’s boy’s soccer team, (Bill Vieth, Isaac Bennett and Sam Hodge) discuss being 2A state champions with our own, Michael Gilbert.

INTERVIEW

(MICHAEL GILBERT)
We just heard from the 2a girls state champions. But another state champion brought home the trophy yesterday too. Let’s welcome the memorial boys soccer team. The newest 2a state champions in to the studio.
Congrats Coach Vieth, how special was Saturday afternoon?

(BILL VIETH)
“it was a great day for our team and our school, so proud of our guys, we played really really well in some difficult conditions on the biggest year of the day. Our guys really stepped up and had a great day.

(MICHAEL GILBERT)
What led you guys to this stage and why were you so successful this year?

(BILL VIETH)
“We started back in July, and we thought we had all the pieces of the puzzle, our kids worked really hard throughout August and September and we kept getting better each week. We just felt confident and things just kind of came into place in the tournament.

(MICHAEL GILBERT)
Now, let’s with a guy who wasn’t afraid to take some chances. Isaac you scored both goals yesterday tying the 2A state finals record, describe what it felt like to help your team to victory?

(ISAAC BENNETT)
“We know soccer is a team sport, I’m center forward, one of the highest guys on the field. it takes the other 10 guys on the field to get the ball to me. It’s a team game.

(MICHAEL GILBERT)
Sam, so counting out one year, you’ve now won a state title three out of the four years with Memorial and didn’t want to let go out that trophy yesterday, now you’ve had 24 hours to let everything sink in, how does it feel to be a state champion?

(SAM HODGE)
“It feels amazing, it all started back when I was six years old, playing around with my friends, started the joy of playing, and it just kept me going.

(MICHAEL GILBERT)
Let’s talk records, Coach Vieth, you have now claimed 5 IHSAA sate titles, that ties a record… does it ever get old lifting up that trophy?

(BILL VIETH)
“No and we never take it for granted, we have had some great teams, some great players. We are just really proud of all of them. and all of them our different on each of those teams. We had some guys win their first title yesterday and then guys like Sam Hodge win his third. Smiles on all of their faces but they are all really special.”

(MICHAEL GILBERT)
You return a lot of guys next season, what does the future look like for the Tigers??

(BILL VIETH)
“We are trying to do it again, but first we are looking forward to enjoy the next few days.”

(MICHAEL GILBERT)
