Ostrich and camel races return to Ellis Park

Sports

HENDERSON, Ky. – (WEHT) Ellis Park fans got a taste of a different kind of racing on Saturday as the camel and ostrich races returned to the track.

The annual Camel Derby and Ostrich Derby featured races with each animal, quite the sight for fans.

“It was my first time on a camel, I just actually took advice from the guys that run the operations, and I listened to what they had to say,” said Camel Derby winner Liz Morris.

While the camels feature a riding experience similar to a horse, the ostrich jockeys had a trickier time staying on the birds.

“I was kidding with my boss asking him about the ostriches, and he told me if I wanted to ride I could get on one. Everybody thought I was joking but we came out and did it,” said Ostrich Derby winner Dylan Willett. “Just hang on, use your legs.”
