Reitz and Mater Dei prepare for annual “West Side Showdown”


EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) Week 9 of the high school football season is rivalry week in the SIAC. It doesn’t get any bigger than the two west-side rivals, Reitz and Mater Dei. This game is one of the best rivalry games in the midwest.
Michael Gilbert previews the battle for the West Side Nut Club trophy from the bowl.

“It’s an enormous week for Mater Dei and Reitz as both teams prepare to go to head to try to claim the West Side Nut Club trophy. Every year, no matters the records, both schools know this game goes beyond the gridiron.
“Growing up on this side of town, growing up with this game, it’s something and it’s great to be apart of it. great to be apart of it as a player and as a coach. Seeing these guys get excited and all the pageantry that comes along with the ballgame is pretty special.”
“Other schools, their rivalries is social media, and it’s just talking to one another. They can have fun with their social media and all that, but with our game it’s a hard-nosed ball game.”
“I think it means a lot, it’s just like any other rivalry game. This is the big one and it’s get a little attention and of course, about three years ago, it was ranked number 1 rivalry in the state. It’s just a great atmosphere, it’s a privilege for these young men and both teams to be able to play in these circumstances.”
“Since we have been in high school, we have not won the Nut Trophy, and it would be really great to get Mater Dei a win over Reitz. Keep the emotions to a minimum because they can control the outcome of this game.”
