Rodney Watson and Rick Stein discuss premature ending for USI basketball’s season

Sports

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) The NCAA DII Elite Eight was suppose to be held this week in Evansville, and USI men’s hoops was hoping to be there.

But the national tournament was canceled last week due to the conornavirus outbreak.
The USI men and women were both preparing to play in the DII regionals when they got word all tournaments had been canceled.

Both head coaches say it was tough to break the news to their team. Rodney Watson says, “They were disappointed. They certainly handled it like gentlemen. Someone expressed their opinion on social media, which I don’t read, but all in all, we understood what was going on. Every decision, it was the right decision. Just unfortunate and disappointing.”

Rick Stein adds, “When you know you are suppose to be playing at this certain time, that time hits and you are not, its disappointing. I feel bad for our student athletes, our fans, their families. So may people that put so much time and effort in. Again, was it the right decision? Absolutely.”
