SMU hands Evansville first loss of the season

Sports

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) The McCarty Party hit it’s first road bump of the season on Monday night at Ford Center.

SMU dominated the Aces on the board, en route to a 59-57 win.

The Mustangs outrebounded Evansville 45-27.

The Aces are now 3-1.

Post game comments:

Jessica Wimsatt: Well much like their game against Kentucky, the Aces battled for a full forty minutes here tonight against SMU but unlike their victory over the Cats, the Aces come up short. And coach McCarty says the biggest reason why, was rebounding.

Walter McCarty: Going in we told them, like guys, this team, they score a lot from going and getting their own rebounds. They’re averaging 15 points a game just from second chance points. And we said if we can keep them off the glass, we win the game. It was that simple, we keep them off the glass, we win the game. You know it sucks when you tell the team this is what they are gonna do and if they do this, they win. If we stop them from doing this, we win. And we just didn’t do it. So they’ve got to be really disappointed to understand the reason we lost this game and hopefully we grow from it.

JaWaun Newton: I think this was a tougher game because they really hit a lot of threes, they really spaced out the floor. Kentucky we were able to pack in the paint but this team we had to they were great drivers and they were great shooters so it was hard. They were just I guess just because they are just really long, they are just hard to score on but we’ll be back and we’ll bounce back next game.

Artur Labinowicz: We just missed some cues on the game plan but I’d say as a team we played very well defensively here and there. We took a lot of charges and we were sacrificing for each other so it’s still a long season so we can’t let one loss get you but I’m definitely gonna let it soak in. You’ve got to accept it and then move on the next game.

Jessica Wimsatt: And the Aces will have to reset quickly but pretty good conditions to do it under. Up next they’ll head to the Bahamas where they’ll take on three games in three days. From Ford Center, Jessica Wimsatt Eyewitness News.
