Chicago Police Department says crime is decreasing


CHICAGO,Ill. (WEHT)- Chicago reports a significant drop in yearly homicides. for a third year in a row. Chicago police say there were 490 murders Tuesday morning which was 13% fewer in 2018.

In a press conference Tuesday night Charlie Beck ,Interim Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department announced a 17% reduction in robberies in the windy city. An 18% reduction in burglaries and 9.6% reduction in shootings compared to last year.

Leaders in the nation third most popular city believe efforts undertaken since 2016. Hiring more police officers, emphasizing community policing and making investments in social services and schools have helped lessen violent crime.

Final accounts will be released after FBI audits are completed in the coming weeks.
