Today's Good News for April 21

LAMAR, Ind. (WEHT) — Deb Scherer unexpectedly died in a car accident in September, and her family continued to honor her legacy with a bake sale and American Red Cross blood drive on Sunday at Saint Peter’s United Church of Christ.

The bake sale supports the Spencer County It Takes A Village No-Kill Rescue while most all the blood donated from the blood drive will stay in the tri-state.

Scherer was known to foster dogs in her life.

“She would be overwhelmed and glad that she has had that much of an impact in her whole community in her church and in her family,” said Stacey Lawalin, who is Scherer’s daughter. “She’d drop everything and do anything for people who needed it. We just want that legacy — that part of her — to carry on.”

HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) — The Henderson Christmas Parade included 100 entries on Saturday morning down Henderson’s Main Street.

Some of the organizations who participated were schools, civic and volunteer organizations, churches and first responders, and they all helped spread holiday cheer to the countless people watching the parade.

The organizers say they wanted to make this parade a community effort for all to enjoy.

“It’s exciting. We have different participants and something for everybody,” Parade Director Ethan Evans said. “It’s really important. It’s tradition — they’ve done it since the fifties.”

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) — Four blocks on Evansville’s Main Street were closed for the eighth “A Downtown Christmas” Saturday where an expected 5,000 came.

Families proved to make merry memories by riding trains, petting reindeer, grabbing hot chocolate and taking pictures with some familiar faces — like Olaf from Frozen and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

Santa and Mrs. Claus both personally came to Evansville, and it also proved popular with a line.

STURGIS, Ky. (WEHT) — In addition to financial situations and high water rates for citizens, Sturgis’s sewer lines are leaking and leaving wastewater to sit on some pieces of private property.

Some residents — like Ronnie Harper — say this is a “bad issue” for the nearby Ohio River.

Harper says wastewater flowing through his front lawn has been an issue for him for two months.
